A Gathering of minds
To experience the true diversity of car culture in this country, a trip to Retro Rides Gathering is a must.
It’s a surreal cocktail of the awesome and the daft. For example, where else could you see a 900bhp Ford RS200 hillclimb monster blast up the Shelsley Walsh hill, followed by a Cobra-engined 1930s rat rod, a pink smoke-spewing BMW drift car and the just-for-shits-and-giggles crawl of a Fiat 126? Nowhere on earth, that’s where.
So rather than blather on trying to describe the indescribable, I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.
Car of the day was undoubtedly the incredible Mazda rotary-engined Jaguar E-Type. Although it wasn’t quite finished, it drew hordes of admirers throughout the day, eager to see it in the flesh after following its build online.
I also had a soft spot for this beefy Vauxhall Firenza. So tough.
And it was good to see the Wacky Races Bedford van back at the Gathering. Unless you’ve seen it in action, you won’t believe how quick this thing is.
Unfortunately, it got a fatal ‘death rattle’ during one of its runs, and had to be delicately nursed back into the pits.
And finally, if one thing sums up the spirit of Retro Rides Gathering, it’s the sight of a 1970s Rolls Royce taxi wafting up the hill – complete with royal-waving passenger.
